Participating in the Mass
Coming to Mass is not a box to tick, but a weekly encounter with the living God who speaks to us in his Word and feeds us with the Body and Blood of his Son. At every Mass, heaven and earth meet.
We are gathered into Christ’s self-offering to the Father and united with the whole Church on earth and in heaven. To receive such a gift, we are invited to come with faith, humility, and a desire to be changed, not simply to “get Communion” and go home. Mass is God’s gracious initiative: he calls, we respond; he speaks, we listen; he gives himself, we offer ourselves in return.
Why come to Mass?
The Mass is the “source and summit” of the Christian life because here we receive Jesus himself, truly present in the Eucharist, and are strengthened to live as his disciples in the world. At Mass we hear the Scriptures proclaimed, and the Holy Spirit uses this living Word to console, challenge, and guide us. We are not saved as isolated individuals, but as members of a people: at Mass we are formed as the Body of Christ, reconciled with one another, and sent out on mission. Sunday Mass, when we are able to attend, is not only a beautiful opportunity but also a serious obligation of love: we give God the worship that is his due and open ourselves to the grace he longs to pour into our lives.
How should I prepare for Mass?
Begin your preparation already on Saturday evening or earlier in the week by calling to mind the coming Sunday, asking the Lord for the grace to hear his Word and receive him with a ready heart. If you are conscious of serious sin, make every effort to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that you may receive Holy Communion worthily and with freedom of conscience. On the day itself, try to arrive in good time, allowing a few minutes of silence to recollect yourself, place your intentions before the Lord, and pray for those who will gather with you. Dress in a way that is modest and respectful, put your phone on silent, and begin to dispose your heart by quietly repeating a short prayer like, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening,” or “Jesus, I trust in you.”
What are the basic requirements for Mass?
To take part fruitfully, we are called to do more than simply be physically present; we are called to participate with mind, heart, and voice. Catholics who are able should attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation; this is how we keep the Lord’s Day holy and give priority to God in our week. To receive Holy Communion, we should be in a state of grace, having confessed any mortal sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and we should fast from food and drink (except water and medicine) for at least one hour before Communion. We are also invited to prepare a concrete intention for each Mass: a person, situation, or need we wish to place on the altar with Christ’s own self-offering.
Do’s and Don’ts for Mass
Do’s for Mass
Arrive in good time so you can pray and settle quietly before Mass begins.
Dress modestly and respectfully, in a way that honours the Lord and the community.
Participate fully with your voice and heart: make the responses, sing, and pray with attention.
Listen carefully to the readings and homily, asking the Holy Spirit to speak to you through them.
Observe the Eucharistic fast (about an hour) and go to confession when needed before receiving Communion.
Receive Holy Communion reverently, with gratitude and faith in the real presence of Jesus.
Stay to the very end of Mass to receive the final blessing and be sent out on mission.
Spend a few quiet moments after Communion in thanksgiving and personal prayer.
Don’ts for Mass
Don’t leave immediately after receiving Communion or before the final blessing and dismissal.
Don’t chat, whisper, or use your phone (messages, social media) during Mass unless truly necessary.
Don’t chew gum, eat, or drink in church before Communion.
Don’t dress or behave in ways that distract others from prayer.
Don’t receive Communion if you are conscious of serious sin and have not yet been to confession.*
Don’t rush out of the church; carry the silence and grace of Mass with you as you go.
*If you aren’t going to receive Communion, you are warmly invited to come forward with your arms crossed over your chest to receive a simple blessing, or to remain in your place and make a quiet spiritual Communion, knowing that the Lord sees your heart and delights in your desire for him.
Prayer for Preparing to Attend Mass
Lord Jesus, I so wish to prepare well to meet you in the Holy Mass. I so want to make all of me ready and attentive and available to you. You know how easily my mind is distracted and my heart is divided. Too often my days are filled with busyness and the pursuit of things that do not truly matter or last. As I come to this Mass, purify my intentions and deepen my desire for you. Give me a new heart, so that all that I am, all I do, all my encounters and reflections, even the frustrations and failings of the week, may be gathered into your perfect offering to the Father. Teach me to listen to your Word, to join fully in the prayers of your Church, and to receive your Body and Blood with living faith, humble gratitude, and burning love. Lord, my life is in your hands; make this Mass a new beginning for me in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen
